d'Olive rites set for Tuesday
CEDAR FALLS—Services for
Charles R. d'Olive, 78, of 1003 Columbia Dr., will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, with burial later in the week at Vine Street Hills Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. d'Olive died yesterday at 12:15 p.m. at Allen Memorial Hospital of cancer.
He was born on July 10, 1896, in Suggsville, Ala., the son of Rudolph and Lela Whisenhunt d'Olive. He married Helen Biecker in Cincinnati on Sept. 30, 1939.
Prior to his retirement in 1971 he served as vice-president at Chamberlain Manufacturing Corporation. He has been sought in recent years as a speaker on early aviation and has been active in several aviation organizations.
He was a member of the Rotary Club, Elks Club, and American Legion Post 138.
He served in World War I as as a pilot and attained the rank of First Lieutenant and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for action during the St. Mihiel offensive.
Because of a delayed confirmation of one of his official air victories, he was the last American ace declared in World War I, having shot down five enemy aircraft.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John M. (Susan) Mozena, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.; a son, Gene, of Brussels, Belgium; and three sisters, Mrs. Richard Davis and Annie Louise d'Olive, both of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Mrs. R.E. Price of Corinth, Miss.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be sent to the Air Force Museum Foundation, Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and to the American Cancer Society.
