Duquesne U. Professor Dies; Noted Historian

Dr. Sydney M. Brown, professor of history at Duquesne University and author of an extensively used textbook on English medieval history, died Monday, April 7. The 57-year-old professor of 1214 West Point Avenue, Northside, came to Duquesne to teach history in 1947.
Born in Marblehead, Mass., Dr. Brown was a graduate of Bowdoin College and was a Phi Beta Kappa. He received his doctorate at Oxford University, England, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. During the World War I he flew with the British Royal Air Force, winning an air medal. In World War II he served with the United States Navy in Britain and Italy. Before joining Duquesne's faculty he taught at Lehigh University 20 years. At the time of his death he was working on two more textbooks in medieval history.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Ellen Brown, and a brother, Clifford Brown of Providence, R. I. The funeral was held Wednesday morning with requiem high mass in St. Cyril's Church at 9:30 a. m.
