Rolls Royce engines in US fighters
The packard built Rolls Royce engine installed in the p-51 gave it many advantages over the p-51 with the Allison engine. I understand that some of our other maufacturers were desirous of having the RR installed in their models. I have read where Curtiss was particu;arly anxious to obtain thei engine.
By the way. How did the Packard built engines compare to their British built cousins?

IIRC- Curtiss P-40 F's and L's had the 1650-1 single stage supercharged engine. Packard -3 was roughly equal to RR 61 which drove the Mk IX Spitfire. I believe the same airframe fitted with a -3 was the Mk XVI. Packard built variants for Hurricane, Mosquito, and Lancaster. A full list of RR and Pachard products and their uses is given in '46 Jane's.
