Chino Airport, Chino, CA to Barstow-Daggett Airport, Daggett, CA.

Altitude & Airspeed: 5500 MSL/110 mph
Take-off: 7:10 a.m.
Landing: 8:10 a.m.
Elapsed: 1hr.
In Control of Ship: 25 mins
Landings: 0
Miles:90
Remarks:
We rise early and pack up Stinson for big
trip to Bartlesville AAA Annual Fly-In, and
gladly leave the stench and mosquitos of
"cow town" behind. It amazes me what good
spirits and friendly manner the residents of
Chino hangars are always in, what with the foul
air they have to breathe. I love Chino Airport, but
cannot stand the air. ~ As we depart into
the quiet hazy morning from Chino, we first head south
toward Corona, then north, climbing above the ARSA.
We see three large airliners on approach from the east
into LAX as we pass overhead above their airspace.
Through the San Bernadino Mtns I reminisce about our
jeep trip with Joe Sand & Dave Pyeatt in those mtns a month
ago. Landing in no wind at Army helicopter/civilian
old airport out in Calif desert. Meet & sign up (into AAC) 5 Army
guys & take their picture. Dave refuels.
Daggett, CA to Pullman Field, Flagstaff, AZ (elevation 7011 ft.):
Sky Conditions: Clear, 20 miles vis., haze
Altitude & Airspeed: 3-4,000 MSL/110 mph
Take-off: 8:55 a.m.
Landing: 11:55 a.m.
Elapsed: 3 hrs.
In Control of Ship: 1hr 30 mins.
Landings: 0
Miles: 316
Remarks:
As we leave the quiet large two-runway air base,
Dave makes a departure from Runway 26 then
mid-field, turns on course due east into hot desert
morning sun. We decide to fly low and follow I-40,
rather than taking a direct line over vast desolate areas
of desert. Not much added mileage doing it this way,
and highways usually go through the lowest spots in
the mountain passes. We pass to the far south of huge area
of sand dunes between Hector VOR & Goffs VOR. The highway
below us provides mental comfort of being within sight
and reach of civilization and help should we need to make
an emergency landing. Other than the road, as far as we
can see in all directions is brown desolation - washed
out, dried up river valleys. The patterns on the ground,
created by ancient floods look like magnifications of
wet sand at the beach when the tide approaches
and retreats from the shore. Due west of the city of
Needles, Calif (16 miles) we make a low pass over a
tempting plateau sticking up out of the ground [sketch]
Needles river valley lights up with bright green rectangular
farms within the surrounding browns and grays.
If there be any pilot who can keep the ball in the middle
of a Stinson 108, he or she be known to the world as
"TOP PILOT."
