Today I saw a Mosca fly

Wich is the same as saying I saw a fly fly. A Polikarpov I-16 Mosca or Rata, built in 1937, refitted in Gorki in 1939-40 with a 1000 HP engine and 4 machineguns, crashed down in Carelia (Finland) somewhere in 1941-42, recovered in 1992, rebuilt in Russia in 1998, moved to New Zealand, purchased in 2005 for Spain.

It is painted as the airplane of José María Bravo, second chief of the Grupo 21 of Mosca fighters of he Republican Air Force. The code CM means "Caza Mosca" (fighter Mosca type). The emblem of the fin is the double six domino piece of the 3rd Squadron

I have better photos from friends cameras and in flight photos but since next week I am going away on holiday don't hold your breath waiting for them

Bonjour Romani!

Wow! ... wish I could see one fly ... Was the the engine song as remarkable, deafening, as has been said? What must it be like to see several flying at once?

Salut!

Buenos dias Kirk. Yes, the sound of the engine starting drowned out all the others, is much louder than the Texan, (600 HP) and possibly being a radial and the exhausts have something to do with it. It sounds like a cross between a washer machine and a souped up motorbike without muffler

Must have been a hard machine to fly, fast landing speed, longitudinally unstable, and with those pointed wings wich make rolling faster but the stall is vicious.

It was arguably superior to the first Messerschmitts, at least below 6.000 meters.

Mosca

I've been using a black green I-16 as a screen saver with the thought of painting a 1944 version of the Eduards kit. But a 1/48 Mosca with Republican markings would be great. Would you have a close up of the dominoes on the tail? Thanks for posting! I'm glad there is still at least one still flying.

Rata

I have seen and heard the Rata fly at Wanaka New Zealand about 3 years ago and it was great. The noise is really loud and unlike any other warbird I have heard and when you see five of them dogfighting together it is simply amazing. Their power-to-weight ration must be very high, judging by the way they move around the sky. In my opinion the experience of watching these planes fly at Wanaka rivalled that of watching a mustang or spitfire. I really like the look of this stubby little plane, but most of all I LOVE the sound it makes!
