Irving jacket

Hello,
I have an Irving jacket which I believe is a WW2 bomber command one. I was told that as it's not a small size the wearer would be too big to get into a Spitfire cockpit? Can anyone tell me if that is fact, whether these were worn in WW1, and suggest any reliable restorers?
All best,
navyman.

If you mean the Irvin (as versus Irving) Jacket, my understanding is that the prototypes of these were first flown in 1938, and issued in 1939. Not WWI usage.

As regarding your question about "too big to fit into a Spitfire cockpit", I have seen references which note that they were "sometimes rather bulky for the close confines of a bomber", so I guess the comment about the Spit might have been right.

They were issued to bomber command from about 1939 through 1943, as I understand it. Doc

Irvin jacket

Hello Doc,
Please excuse my spelling of Irvin, I was a submariner and have little knowledge of the RAF/RFC.
Thank you for the information. I rescued the jacket which was being used as a liner for a dog basket, in exchange for a new blanket for the dog!
I'm hoping to have it restored, (meagre funds allowing), and would like to use it but am undecided as I would hate to see it damaged any more than it already is. I'm disabled and it would be great to wear whilst riding my electric tricyle, I have a pair of same vintage flying goggles. Would be fun to 'fly' it around my local supermarket?
Thanks again,
Best regards,
navyman.

No excuses necessary-- I just wanted to make sure I was commenting on the right piece of equipment. This is not my area either, so as far as I know there may have been an "Irving" jacket as well, to which my comment may not have applied. Not trying to correct you so much as avoiding making an easy mistake. I have commented before on an item, only to have the originator say "No, the way I spelled it was right-- that is a different item...."

Anyway, sounds like a great find, and I wish you all the best luck in getting it wearable (yes, it does sound like great fun for the supermarket!) Doc

Irvin jacket

Thanks Doc,
Will let you know if I find a good restorer, providing I'm not in the cooler for upsetting supermarket customers!
All best,
navyman.
