Forgive me for being a little skeptical here, but, I’ll be surprised if we ever hear definitively who was involved in the taking or returning of the Gnome. I can just hear it now: “well, well. . . ahem, in the interest of propriety, what what, … we don’t want to invade a person’s right to privacy … ah… er… it’s probably, ah… best that they remain nameless… after all it was returned… ah ... er... and isn't that all that really matters?”

I’m glad you said “definitively”. I think we all have our speculations as to who is involved, and I don’t think the cumulative list is very long either. But, with respect to the moderators, it is not responsible or proper to use names at this time.

Of course it is a very good thing that the engine has been returned. And yes, we can bask for a short while in the glow of knowing that a valued part of the collection has found its way back to where it belongs.

But that is NOT all that matters. The most important thing at this time is to continue the investigation, continue to collect the forensic evidence that will make the iron-clad case against those involved with the ‘temporary relocation’ of the Gnome. Ultimately what really matters is that the person(s) involved are arrested and incarcerated so that they can not continue to pillage Cole Palen’s Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome.

I’m sure that once an actual arrest is made, those names will be made public here on this forum and in other publications as well. Until that time, to act responsibly, they should remain nameless here on the forum. When can we expect the arrest? Unfortunately, I don’t know that answer, but indications suggest it won’t be that much longer.

It is also a good idea not to use proper names so that any future court case on the matter may not be jeopardized by someone having done so on a public forum.

We need to make sure of one other thing, and that would be to insure once the thief(s) are identified and fired, that they don't get rehired by the board. We don't won't a repeat of scenarios of the past.

Salute!

"rehired by the board" ?????? Don't you mean "join the board"?

Selective News

I see that the ORA website has added a small blurb on the return of the missing Gnome. It is interesting that the actual disappearance of the Gnome didn't seem to be newsworthy.

Some corrections

Thanks to Albrecht for pointing out that the Aerodrome has updated their website with the latest information about the Gnome. I did notice some errors and other ommissions, so I have corrected the copy here. To the Aerodrome website Webmaster, please feel free to use these corrections.

MISSING ROTARY ENGINE FOUND

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To our Members and visitors. We are pleased to report that a vintage engine, a 160hp Gnome Rotary reported missing from the collection has been found. We are relieved! We want to thank the efforts of the New York State Police and especially those past members and volunteers who have not given up on Cole Palen’s dream. A special vote of thanks goes out to Carroll Gray of WWI Aero for his lead in the recovery of the engine. The massive publicity campaign created made it virtually impossible to fence the engine anywhere in the world. The investigation is still ongoing since it's discovery last Saturday. We will keep you informed of any more developments, as they are made available to us. For the latest developments that don't come to us, see World War 1 Aeroplanes, Inc., and Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum and Rhinebeck Museum trouble. Scroll down to post # 2353 for the beginning of this chapter in Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome history. Again, our heart felt appreciation goes out to the members of SORA for their unwavering devotion.
