Having been to the Aerodrome over the last 10 years or so, primarily to attend the Jamboree, I too am concerned about what is or is not going on. But I do not want to loose sight of what ORA is while we busily pronounce it dead and buried and lambast those who we
think are responsible.
As for Gene, Dan, Tom and others it isn't of much surprise to me that they do not want to enter the fray here. Some of the things said about them, regardless of their validity or not, have been down right nasty. Would any of you want to subject yourselves to this?
Brian, you may not remember me, but that was a wonderful piece you wrote about your Dad. Please accept my condolences on your loss. I will also appreciate the opportunity to sit in your D-VIII and dream of what it would be like in the air. I will also always remember the flying lesson you gave me over the Hudson River one Saturday in the Luscombe! Your friendliness and willingness to talk with "yet another airplane nut" will always be appreciated. In fact it is just this sprirt that makes ORA the special place it is. I have always received nothing but the finest treatment from everyone associated with ORA. Always answering questions, even though I know they had answered them a 1000 times before. Never turning down a request for a photo or a chance to hang in the cockpit and take pictures. Not many museums in the world let the average joe very close to their artifacts. Most places the pilots and volunteers are aloof or even surly and the aircraft/artifacts unapproachable.
I am sorry I have missed you over the last few years. I know you have been busy with your family. Hopefully we will get a chance to meet again at this years Jamboree.
Hopefully, everything will get straightened out. Not having Ken or Jim Hare around will be tough to handle. Jim, I think, is the finest announcer they have had. At least in my years of going.
A good friend of mine spoke with Bill King at WRAMS. I will leave it to him to report what Bill said. Private conversations should remain private unless one of the parties chooses to make it public. Speculation serves no good purpose. I am hoping Bill will be there this year. I too am looking forward to a ride in his Tiger Moth.
As for Dan Taylor, he has been nothing but terrific to me. Never an unkind word and I really appreciated the chance to go for a ride on Sunday afternoon after the Jamboree was over in his Waco. He even let me fly for a bit. I just wish my video camera hadn't run out of battery during the flight!
Gene is another person I appreciate. He always answers questions and was kind enough to let another pilot take me up in his Stampe several years ago.
Those of you who love aviation as much as I do, and are unable to participate except vicariously, know how special an opportunity it is to get to fly in one of these aircraft. While the gentlemen can't always accommodate a request (nor should they have to) they do, occassionally, take passengers for a lift. After all these are their
personal aircraft! And it costs real money to fly them! I truly appreciate you for giving me these opportunities.
So I will continue to hold close the terrific memories I have of ORA and look forward to new adventures at ORA, should the opportunity arise.
