Hi John,
I loved your Loening monoplane, really a piece of artwork. Please post some pictures over on the AeroDrome model forum of her. It will be a real treat!
Comments on ORA:
I too loved the model flying and the 1/3 scale semi-dogfight at the end. But it did hear people commenting about not seeing the Full Size planes fly, specially the WW-1 airshow. They should have flown something.
I have seen the show for over 30+ years and attend the R/C model meet since the early 60's. A lot has changed which one excepts to but in a forward way. I feel ORA has moved backwards IMHO. Very little new and a lot of items missing.
The base of ORA is the flying of the old planes and the WW-1 airshow, sad that they do not even have a constant group of pilots that can put a show on. The model fly at the end, as I said was nice to see for this event, but the Real planes are what people come to see, they are the spirit of Old Rhinebeck.
Cheers,
WF2

Rhinebeck
WF2, Of course I completely agree with you. It is a real privilege to be able to have the R/C Jamboree at Rhinebeck. I'll post some pics soon once I get them out of my wife's camera.

No ORA airplanes flying on the biggest weekend of the year?
I can only repeat again what Hugh Schoelzel told me at the Sun 'N' Fun airshow in Florida way back in April 2006: "We're going to have 20 or 21 airplanes flying, and put on the most spectacular shows in the history of Old Rhinebeck"
Great job Hugh. Two years. What an amazing failure. Or triumph of stubborness and ego.
The sad thing is that there is talent out there who would dedicate the time to ORA to make it work, but they're not welcome by the present "caretakers".

You obviously don't know much, I left in 1986. But I knew a lot of the good people who stayed, and have met some of the others who are there now.
Sorry I apparently haven't lived up to your obviously very high standards.
Back to relevant discussion please.
You are correct in the fact that I really don't know much of what has gone over there, but you seem very passionate about the place and I was just wondering why you left,
No offense Sir

Paul H. told me the same thing in 2007, and it never happened that I saw. Unless maybe he meant over the course of the whole show season.
Apparently they were coached to give standard answers to questions. I am not sad that I missed that show, but thanks for going and letting us know how it went.
Chad Wille also told me last year that no one was ever fired, they left of their own accord. The trustees told some, their services were no longer required. I consider that the same as being fired, but technically it could be called a layoff.
If the Old Guard had never been run off, then the Nieuport 24 would never have come to ORA and Mr. Nasta would still be alive. The Camel and Nieuport 11 wouldn't have suffered the crashes that destroyed them. The Spirit of St. Louis would have been long completed and no doubt a real attraction. The shows would be what they used to be. And it would be like a step back in time, something it hasn't been since 2004. It is more like going to a zoo, where you walk around and look at things from the other side of the fence or rope and there is little interaction. Used to be, volunteers, pilots, actors, and staff would greet people, answer questions, tell them stories from history. Not so anymore. Hell, most of the time you can't find anyone who knows anything.
Salute!

What Country Am I Living In?
There is something wrong here. Again. A good friend of mine was at the model meet. He was standing at the WW1 Aero booth. When he over heard Jim Record tell Tom P. to pull the latest issue off the table. Or else, there will be no model meet next year. In this issue, there is an article about the petition to the state. Hold on Porky. Under what authority does he have to do this? What happened to, Freedom of Speech? The petition is in the hands of the state. Fact not fiction. Can what Jim Record said be called a threat? Blackmail? Is he going to rewrite The Bill of Rights? Well, I got to go. I am going to lite the grill.

THAT'S what i mean by the power of denial. In their collective "mind", they
believe that their ORA is better than Cole Palen's ORA!! Yes, it's laughable,
but Model Meet Sunday just confirmed again, how they have wrecked the
Aerodrome. Lots of disappointed patrons. Record and company know that
the petition is the pin that can burst their bubble!!!

... so if the board members are removed from ORA, who will take their place? Are people willing to put in the hard work to keep Cole's dream alive? Will the transition of the board in anyway close ORA for any length of time? If it does, can it survive it?
Just curious.

Rhinebeck
That's a good point WF2, perhaps it would be prudent to put a roster together of Cole Palen supporters who are willing and able to take on the task of maintaining and operating the aerodrome on a full time bases. Maybe a pole could be started right here on the Aerodrome? It is unlikely to me that right now with the economy and the state of the world in general being what it is that many can afford to be "volunteers". Running the Aerodrome is a formidable task and it will take lots of money and effort to bring it to the condition we all would like to see. As much as I would like to I could not possibly spend as much time as would be required or make the trip from where I live on a regular basis and I am sure that many with the same passion could either. This is not something that can be started and walked away from if things don't work out as I am sure you all realize. Just my two cents worth.
