Then by the same reasoning, it would be perfectly acceptable to see a cessna 182 flying rides at Old Rhinebeck. It shows the technical progression of what was being developed in the Pioneer, WW1, and the golden age.
I like helicopters, just not at Old Rhinebeck.

You may also want to read Dan Barbiero's article on the U.S. effort to develop the helicopter in 1917-1918. Over the Front, Vol. 16, Number 1, Spring 2001, pages 52-68.

I think if Cole had wanted to bring helicopters out to the field, he had plenty of opprtunity to do so - but didn't. Keep the whirlybirds at home, they break the atmosphere (literally !).

CodyPaul: I think you are very clever. Your tongue-in-cheek response could only have been meant to serve as a catalyst for the lively discussion on helicopter history that followed. After all, Newton described the laws of motion over 300 years ago, but I don't think anyone is advocating a Sputnik launch every summer weekend at the aerodrome. Stolen Cub was perhaps most succinct and convincing. If Cole thought helicopters were appropriate, they would have been represented at ORA in some manner or form long ago. While some may feel this helicopter issue is being overblown, I strongly believe it is a microcosm of how the mission of the aerodrome has been hijacked by the current leadership.

If you want a fair and accurate representation of all forms of aviation that qualify for the WW1 and developmental years that followed, then go to the Smithsonian. This peeing contest about what Cole would have wanted and whether Piasecki's Flying Banana belongs there is absurd. The Aerodrome is unique and appealing because of what it is (or was) right now. It's a unique slice of aviation history. Period, the end.

This helicopter discussion comes to a basic reality. Every spring, new driveways are cut into various plots of woods that surround the Aerodrome area. More new homes are being built around the area. These new families have no idea the noise that they will be subject to every weekend. Complaints will follow, with the helicopter rides and the Aerodrome does not need more complaints about noise. This is a friend of Tom Daly's,as is the Nas car, a family member. In my opinion, both will draw alot more complaints.

If the purpose of the Aerodrome is to restore and preserve aviation history up to 1939, then anything later does not belong. You would not expect museums of high caliber such as Sturbridge Village, Mystic Seaport, or Colonial Williamsburg exhibiting anything out of their time element in their central areas. I have never been to Owl's Head, do they mix time periods?
The helicopter did bring in revenue. But if Ken and Scott were allowed to finish the Spirit of St. Louis, and the museum was open year round as the Thompson Matching Grant promised, those fundraising projects would have eventually brought more revenue to the Aerodrome in being eligible for more grants.

I think Cal is on the wright trac.
The only time I ever saw helicopters at ORA was back in .......crap I can't remember what year that was - anyhow, I think they were National Guard Hueys. They were considerate enough to land up on the North end of the field.
About the guy holding the coffe cup whilst pushing the Bleriot - I believe that was the late Rick Vogt.
Anyone remember when the Grumman Wildcat landed there?
Heres a thought - How much would all the ORA property be worth if it were subdivided? If the place folded who would be there to snatch it up...... maybe this whole mess is not entirely about the collection.
I can see it now - "Aerodrome Estates at Rhinebeck" (the "at" part provides the upscale panache you know). Hey, if they changed McDonalds to "McDonalds AT Hyde Park" (or what ever town you choose) could they double their prices? Would you have to wear penny loafers or topsiders to get in? Would they still take travelers checks? Would you get TWO plastic forks? Maybe Martha Stewart would eat there... "At" - It's a good thing.....
Sorry, I got off track there for a minute.
I like the fond memories and fotos topic. I will look through the archives and see what I can put together. Putting them on the forum will be a real challenge - I probably shouldn't attempt it without supervision though.
