rc-notyme and HERE CAT !!!,
Thanks for the supportive comments. Your good ORA memories and pics will be most welcome to the postings that have been coming in quickly in just the first few days.
Someone computer savvy should be coming forward soon to guide us through the ins and outs of posting our pics properly. You're not the only computerly-challenged out there. It appears there are many of us.
If you aren't ready to invest in a scanner, the foks at KINKOS can scan your photos (and assist with getting them onto the thread(s)).
Meanwhile, your caption assistace and/or positive ORA recollections are appreciated and encouraged.

RC- THE DATE EXSCAPES ME ABOUT THE GRUMMAN,BUT I'M GONNA SAY 1987-88 I THINK THERE WAS 11 MOTHS
I REMEMBER IT TO BE A MUGGY MORNING WHEN HE FIRED UP THE RADIAL ENGINE.WHEN HE RAN UP TO FULL THROTTLE, HE DREW ALL THE MOISTURE OUT THE AIR AND OBSCURED THE FUSELAGE FROM VIEW FOR A MOMENT.
I THINK IT WAS A DUPONT THAT OWNED THE WILDCAT. HE HAD TROUBLE WITH THE TAILWHEEL AND ONLY TAXIED PART WAY UP THE HILL AND SPUN AROUND FOR TAKE-OFF. HE WAS AIRBORNE SHORTLY AFTER REACHING THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL . HE WENT STRAIGHT UP AND THEN BUZZED THE RUNWAY.
HE GROUND LOOPED UPON ARRIVAL A FEW DAYS EARLIER AND WHEN HE MADE A SECOND APPROCH AFTER THE BUZZ JOB ,COLE SAID" OH NO ,WHAT'S HE DOING? NOT ANOTHER LANDING." THE PILOT FLEW BY WITH FLAPS AND HIS ARRESTER HOOK DOWN FOR DISPLAY. MUCH TO COLE'S RELIEF.
BETWEEN THE TWO RHINEBECK SITES I FEEL I'M PLAYING CYBER TENNIS,

@ Here Cat. Please don't type with Caps. On the NET this means you are yelling.
Just a bit of friendly advise for you.

I have driven by the aerodrome quite a few times over the past few weeks. Last Thursday there was someone there for the first time since I can remember. The gate was open so I drove over to my Ercoupe. I checked it over and found my fuel tanks “bone-dry”. I have reported it to the NY State Police as tampering since the fuel tank caps were put on backwards, and if there was fuel in the tanks and I hadn’t noticed it and gone aloft, I would be coming back down again in 12-15 minutes as the fuel siphons out at a terrific rate in flight. $60.00 of fuel is only a petty thing, but tampering is something else. In fact, it is a federal offense.
With the aerodrome on lockdown, the privileged few (of which I’m not one) are able to be on the field without subject to arrest. And since it would take a minimum of at least a half an hour to drain two tanks at one time, it would seem to me to be an inside job.
This is the second time this has happened to me since Daly has been their leader, and the strange thing is that no one else on the field has suffered any fuel loss.
There was a dumpster by the carriage house two weeks ago, a lot of “trash” outside the workshop, including one of Kens 30x36 framed print of the Keith Ferris painting of the Spirit of St. Louis. Now there’s a large dumpster over by the #1 hangar. Are they’re getting rid of anything that might be damaging to them down the road?
There’s been absolutely no aircraft activity at all.

Dick
The large dumpster by #1 is in response to comments made during a walk through by gov't officials.
As for the "trash" outside the shop - looks like spitefull removal of all vestiges of Ken's existance at ORA.
Sorry to hear about the fuel "loss". Field closed for security purposes...right.
Whose "security"?
Of course Dick you can bank on "field security" to take the art of B.S. to new heights- or depths- when interviewed. Get ready ffor a new assault on your integrity.

A couple of years ago, Keith Ferris came up to ORA with the Aviation Artists on their annual September pilgrimage and signed that posted for Ken. He had even offered to replace it with a new one since the edges were frayed, but the had long sold out.
I don't think he would do the same for the current crew.....

Was this walk thru recent or part of an annual inspection? I do wonder if anything of value is being tossed. either monetery or of historical value to Old Rhinebeck. I also question if any of this "trash" might have been better put on Ebay to raise funds. As they say "One mans garbage.............
Salute,
Steve

sorry about the use of caps, i do not know the ways of the net and typing is not my forte.
as i drove by the aerodrome today, i wondered if the dumpster by old # one hangar had anything to do with the disappearance of the village.
bar-le-duc is what cole palen called it. the hotel paree, the jail, and the bad boyz saloon appear to be gone.
maybe there are plans for a new, more modern structure to bomb.maybe there are plans to do away with that aspect of the show altogether.
as there was not a soul to be seen, one can only speculate as the amount of maintenance, repairs and preparation that is taking place. there was a time when april and may were a beehive of activity.
maybe the helicopter rides will pick up the slack.
i wonder what else of cole palen has been resigned to the dumpster
