Thanks AAC...
...that was splendid footage. I visited as a teenager back in the early 70's and the film brings back vivid memories. I feel honored to have met Cole Palen. he was great with the kids, made them all feel really welcome. He introduced me to an elderly German visitor (Carl Becker, if I recall right, and who I believe to have been a WW1 pilot, tho I have not been able to trace him). Is there any way to check Rhinebeck records, old newsletters, photos?

Great footage! I have a big box full of Super 8 movies of my Dad's that I someday would like to get on disc and share with everyone. There is some really great footage, especially the air to air stuff.
Here are a couple of slides I scanned to the computer, the posed shot after a Tripe groundloop and the Pup departing Greig's field after a windy day.
Enjoy!
Geoff

marc,
perhaps someone here is familiar with Carl Becker or might have a stack of old "rotary ramblings" newsletters that has a mention of him.

Pictures archive
I wanted to start area to specifically share old pics. I have always loved the two taken about July 1987 and the last in 1976.

hi kfsip,
thank you very much for sharing your excellent pictures of cole palen and his old rhinebeck aerodrome! i hope you don't mind that i moved your posts to this thread which seeks the same puirpose. did you take those photos yourself? perhaps you have a story to share of your experiences at ORA or even more photos to share. we hope so.
say, are you (or anyone here) able to read the words and numbers painted on cole's DR.1 fuselage in the first photo in post #955?

Photo-sharing
I have wanted to share these photos for a very long time. All photos posted by me were taken by my Father in the 1970's or by me. I shot first picture set in 1978 when I was eight. I have been familiar with the sound of a Palen rotary engine since age three and driving by after Church. So my memory of the shows go back to '73. Though, it's possible I was familiar with the rotary sound, in vitro, since I am from Rhinebeck. I do make a point to not post pictures taken by others unless cited or located in the public domain.

Photo on 955
The words on Coles Dr. 1 were pretty much the standard wording for weight and loading. I can do a higher resolution scan if I can ever find the negative and certainly isolate the lettering better. Though I wonder if he did have hidden Palenesque German puns hidden in there.
But upon closer look now-OMG, "Nutzlast 172" not sure if that is legit Dr 1 lettering. I just ran a quick enhancement!!!
The first word is "Leergevicht 564 kg." which equates to Empty Weight. Then "Nutzlast 172" The last is "Gesamt Gewicht 736" which equates to Gross Weight.
