Fatal Crash Today

I hate to report this.
Just got home from Rhinebeck.
At the very end of the show, they were staging a dogfight between the Nieuport 24 and the DR-1.
The Nieuport spun out into the trees out of sight, followed by some minutes of dark smoke.
We recieved no details at the show, but a check of the Web indicates the pilot died.
Sorry, I didn't get his name.
I've been away from here a long time. Hate to come back on this note.

Not too much

The airplane was the Nieuport 24-bis obtained from New Zealand last year.

It was reportedly tail heavy.

The pilot stalled/spun out of turn at the south end of the field.

The airplane caught fired after the crash and the pilot did not get out.

There's more to tell, but I am certain it will all come out through the course of time.

God rest the pilot....

Reinbeck fatality

Dated 18 August

RHINEBECK, N.Y. (AP) -- A veteran pilot and flight instructor is dead after crashing a World War I replica biplane during an air show in the Hudson Valley.

Authorities say Vincent Nasta of Wading River, N.Y. was flying a single-engine French plane in a simulated dogfight when it crashed about 1,000 feet from the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. The plane landed in a wooded area and caught fire. The 47-year-old pilot was the sole occupant.

The replica 1917 Neiuport 24 biplane belonged to the aerodrome, which is about 85 miles north of New York City. The facility holds regularly scheduled exhibitions that include dogfights and barnstorming flights in vintage planes.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman says the agency is assisting the National Transportation Safety Board in the investigation.

“I love doing this stuff and I love teaching. One of the things I tell the kids is, find something you love to do and be passionate about it. Practice at it and try to be good at it. Don’t be a spectator.” - Vincent Nasta

It may sound trite, but he was doing what he loved when it happened.
