Those Were the Days

Got a new scanner so I could scan some of the old family slides (you should see dad on his wedding day...), and I thought I'd post some of the ORA stuff I've found.

ORA line up, and what a line up

SPAD running up

Fokker D.VII on its nose, I think Cole did this to mount the top wing after the rebuild after the snow caused the hangar to collapse on it

Miss Pittsburgh mishap

Thomas Pusher

Thomas Pusher again, wonder who all those guys are

I've got some more I'll post when re-sized. As you can see some of them are dirty, I'll have to figure out the best way to clean them.

Great stuff, Bald Eagle. If your scanner has digital ice or similar you can try that, otherwise, it's a very tedious process in Photoshop to clean them up. The biggest thing is to keep the scanner as clean as possible and clean the slides before scanning. The canned air can blow off most stuff, but the stubborn stuff has to be cleaned with chemicals. A local photo store may have film cleaner (don't use anything other than film cleaner, these slides are far to precious to risk!) if not, try one of the big mail order places like B&H Photo.
It looks like some of them may be affected by fungus. They should be scanned to capture as much detail as possible as soon as possible (by ASAP, I mean within the next few months, fungus doesn't usually grow that fast). Fungus damage can't be fixed, it can be slowed down, but it will come back eventually. Any slides with fungus should be stored separately from the rest to minimize the risk.

Bald Eagle, thanks for posting up the photos. I look forward to more when you get to it. Digitizing of photos is indeed a good idea. Film may keep for a long time, but digital photos will last forever without further degradation. When I copy my old photos I keep original files at the full size and make copies of them with different but appropriate file names, i.e. making smaller ones to put online.

You were really privileged to have grown up around the Aerodrome and I appreciate your sharing that with us.

Salute!
Sandy
