Please excuse any ignorance but does this denote a recent sale or is it from 1956?

It will only say "sale reported" if it's fairly recent

name at that address:

Gregory G Vilchitski
23316 87th Ave
Queens Village, NY 11427-2703

age: 56/57

Looking up the N-number on the FAA's site says:
ATTENTION!
This aircraft's registration status may not be suitable for operation.

Please contact the Aircraft Registration Branch at 1-866-762-9434 for additional information.

From what I recall, Cole gave the Pitcairn to a family member, and Rita's sister Marion's last name I believe was Vilchitski.
