I have a very detailed question... was there anything on the uniform of an American aviator which would fit this description:

"a small black badge bearing four initials... either USAF or USAR... wore on the breast and fastened with a needle."

Was the air service at that time yet OFFICIALLY designated as the United States Air Service? Perhaps USAS? And what, if any, part of an American uniform fit this description? This was not a button or medal; it was a piece of fabric apparently sewn into the uniform.

I'm trying to use a civilian's post-war description of a uniform to ascertain things and I don't have detailed knowledge of. EEK! Many thanks.

The only things I could find in both patch and pin form are:

and

Otherwise I'd try and ask a curator at the USAF museum in Dayton. you should be able to find their e-mail address on their site.

As far as what specific iteration they were classified as, well, I'll leave that to the more learned amongst us.

Don't know if thos images help but I will keep looking....

The only things that I have seen worn on the left breast of an aviators uniform are his wings which could have been sewn on, with a US on the shield, medal bar, and possibly a unit insignia. If he were trained by the French, he might have a French pilot badge on the right breast. The pilot's wings come closest to meeting your description, but would not have had the 4 letters you describe. At the time, the air service was officially designated the United States Air Service, Signal Corps (USAS or USASSC).

Yes, but they still would only have had the letters "US" on the wings, not USAS. Does everyone agree on that? And thanks for the pics, Alan. Those are the same buttons I have in my collection and I saw no letters on them at all. So far I have nothing that firmly fits the description at all.

Anyone else got anything? Thanks guys.
