Was there a Canadian Flying Corps during the First World War...or ever for that matter? I just got a flight jacket with CFC buttons and a blanket liner. Fairly typical WWI era jacket. I need help figuring out what this stands for and since it came from Canada this is the logical starting point.
thanks

Sam,

First off let me say that I am by no means an expert when it comes to Canadian Aviation - I'm just interested in my history. That being said, as far as I know there was never a Canadian Flying Corps perse. The first real attempt at creating a 'Canadian' force was at the outbreak of WWI with the 'Canadian Aviation Corps'. This small force had only one plane and in reality the CAC disapeared in about a year. The next major attempt was later in the war with the Royal Canadian Naval Air Service and the Canadina Air Force, of these two forces only the CAF survived. The CAF was approved on May 29, 1918 but it too was disbanded in 1920. Finaly the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) was formed in April of 1924 and it is this force which exists in some form or another today.

An exalent force for a history of Canada's Air Force history is the multi volume work Canada's Air Force: At War and Peace by Larry Milberry (who worked with our very own Hugh A Halliday) on the chapters concerning the early years of aviation.

cheers,
JonathanS

Hello:

There was a Canadian Forestry Corps in both World Wars, but I know nothing of their uniforms.

The push for a Canadian Flying Corps got caught in political wrangling, and so didn't happen during the war. An article about this appeared in OTF 2001 Winter Issue.
