Hello, I am trying to find any information regarding the 4th Group, 5th Squadron that was based in San Pellagio, Italy. I'm a neophyte to military aviation history, so I'm not even sure if the group/squadron designation was from the Italian Air Squad, or if it was an AEF designation.

Fiorello LaGuardia was a pilot with this squad, and I am trying to find information on the following: 1) the basic makeup of the squad (i.e., how many American pilots there were, and the ratio to Italian pilots) 2)what types of missions/battles they were engaged in, and finally 3) what the unit's emblem/insignia looked like. (On the last topic, I have only been able to find a insignia for a 5th Pursuit Squadron, but have no idea if this is the Italy-based unit I'm looking for).

Any information about the above would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

'Wings OF Honor' has some info on the Americans in Italy. LaGuardia was with the 5a Caproni bomber squadriglia of IVth grupe from 8-8-18 to 10-4-18.
Datafile 78 also has a few sentences on him. In Feb. 18 he was with 411 US student pilots at the 8th Centro Istruzione at Foggia training on the S1A 7B, but pushed for further training on Capronis. It notes that 406 Americans completed the course and many flew Capronis operationally with Italian units. A pic of a sqad. 5a Caproni Ca.3 has no special markings.
The lists in WOH list only 6 Americans in the 5a squad. and a group photo
of some pilots of IVth Groupo has 7 Americans and 13 Italians (maybe a common ratio of pilots?)
