[b] I have a photo of an occupied French village with a sign that apparently points to the German commander's office. I can barely make it out... this is the best I can do -
"Absebours (or Absebotts)
DrIsKommandantur"
And another sign on the door reads
"Sannelstette" (or Sannelstelle)
with several other papers posted on the door below it. Unfortunately, they are hopelessly small and cannot be read.
Any ideas? Many thanks!

I believe that the word is 'Sammelstelle', which means in English 'gathering place' or 'collecting point'.
The verb 'sammeln' means to collect. The word 'stelle' means place or position.
