Two part question for our esteemed forumites -

15 September 1918, 4 Camels of the 148th Aero including Lts. Springs, Ralston and Percy Cunnius attack a "Halberstadt" 2-seater near Epinoy. Springs sees tracers enter the observers cockpit and the observer stops firing. The airplane goes down trailing smoke at 10:40 AM. They followed him down to 500', but no mention is made of the airplane crashing.

Assuming the observer was hit and probably killed and that the airplane actually did crash and kill the pilot, Rick Duiven's Casualties of the German Air Service (Thanks Rick&#33 lists a few potential matches.

1) Uffzs. Danzmann & Dittmar Schusta 36 KIA near Antullera
2) Five casualties near Cambrai with no units listed. Epinoy is just a few kilometers distant so these are included.
Lftsch. Foshag, Gefrs. Gieseler and Leingruber and Vzfs. Mitschein and Sandtvos. It is not clear how, if at all, these crews were paired.

I don't see any other possibilities based on the list, but it may be incomplete and the possibility certably exists the German crew escaped unharmed.

However, the question is - Where is Antullera ? I could not find it on any map on the web or here at home. It would help include or eliminate this crew as a possibility.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Mike:

It should be spelled Antullen (my fault). It's in the 19. Armee area near Metz. I hope it shows up on "Maps" within 'Expedia.com'. R.

Well, it doesn't. Which means one of many possibilities:

1. It is badly mis-spelled
2. It no longer exists
3. The Germans spelled it wrong
4. It was a suburb of Metz and has since been "eaten up"
5. ??????

I found this link to be interesting....note the dates and the French and German equivalents....

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/michel.barbi...Lor-SpeAF.html

If it became "Antilly" it might be easier to find now....and looking in mapquest it looks to be about 5 or 6 kms northeast of Metz...
