Tiger/Shark Mouths on Cowlings

Going through the photos in Over The Front Vol. 19 #2, on page 164 there is a photo of a Nieuport 14 with a toothy grin. My impression is that these shark or tiger mouths aren't seen very often in WW1, is that correct? Anyone know how early the toothy grin started appearing in the battlefield skies?

Best regards,
Zeppelin

Ralph O'Neal's Nieuport 28 is a well-known example, but I think you're right that there aren't many.
