Azelot Aerodrome

Folks,

I am planning a trip to Europe later this year and one of the possible things that I was thinking of was to visit Azelot aerodrome. But I have a few questions.
Is the aerodrome known by that name now the same site as was used by 55 sqdn and others during 1918?
If so, is there any information I can get showing what the airfield was like during the latter part of 1918?

Thanks

Years ago I did an article called "Commanding the 11th; the service career of Capt. Charles Heater" for OTF. Before taking command of the 11th Aero, Heater was a pilot in RAF 55 and he flew out of Azelot field. At the time I was mainly concerned with getting Heater's memoirs right and I didn't put much effort into researching Azelot field, but I do remember that it was mentioned many times in the text of the article. Perhaps you can glean something from it.

If you don't have Volume 3 of OTF, you can find the article online at http://www.sopwithmotorsports.com/in...dron/id78.html

Azelot

Hi Certifs,

It seems that the aerodrome still exists and is used as a school for parachutists.

Take a look at http://uk.geocities.com/majorsnowdon/johnswarmiss.html

Here's a picture from Keith Rennles' book Independent Force. It shows the entrance to Azelot aerodrome.

I don't know if you've heard of this book, but if you want to go to Azelot it might be interesting to read.

Hopes this helps a bit.

Jos
