chevrons on uniform

Can anyone tell me what the chevrons on this mans left arm are for. He was an Air Mechanic 2nd Class. Taken May 1917. Are they anything to do with time served?

This looks like an Armee` de l'Air rank insignia for a Sergeant ADL or Master Sgt. You may find this link useful:

I hope this is helpful.

It seems that the German's thought that this was his rank as well, however he was a 2AM and I am thinking that they have some other meaning.

Chevrons on Left Sleeve

Jamie,

Assuming the photo you have is of a “Royal Flying Corps” Air Mechanic 2nd Class, then they are Good Conduct Stripes. They were only worn on the left sleeve, as Service Chevrons/Stripes which were much smaller were worn in a similar position on the right sleeve.

Hope this helps,
Insignia.

And two indicates six years service of 'undetected crime'.
