Thank you, Graeme.
That's wonderful information, it help's me gain a greater understanding of my great uncle's military papers.
In september 1916 he was promoted to sergeant major (D) and transfered to squadron 41. Was squadron 41 a new squadron?.
Thank's again
Mike

No 41 Squadron formed up at Gosport on 14 July 1916 and went to France in October. It initially received the FE8 "pusher", which it used until re-equipped with the equally unliked DH5 in July 1917. In November 1917 the squadron re-equipped with the SE5A which it used to the end of the war.
No 18 Squadron had formed on 11 May 1915 at Northolt and moved to France in November, using the Vickers "Gunbus". These were replaced with FE2s in April 1916 and these, in turn, replaced with DH4s in May 1917. DH9As were received shortly before the end of the war. The squadron was fairly "mobile" so it'll take a little while to put together a list of locations, but watch this space.

Thanks for the new information, i look foward to the info on 18 squadron.
According to my great uncle's military records he joined up with 18 squadron on the 18th january 1914. Would this be a error, or would the ground crew have gone to Northolt early, to prepare the planes etc.
Sorry but i have another question, is there such a thing as squadron diaries, if so where would i be able to view them.
Thanks
Mike.

In January 1914, the RFC had only six squadrons, these being:
No 1 Sqn, formed on 13-May-1912
No 2 Sqn, formed on 13-May-1912
No 3 Sqn, formed on 13-May-1912
No 4 Sqn, formed in Aug-1912 (from No 2 Flight, No 2 Squadron)
No 5 Sqn, formed on 26-Jul-1913
No 6 Sqn, formed on 31-Jan-1914
It would appear that the reference to No 18 Squadron at this time is a typo - is there reference to a location? We might be able to work out which squadron was there at the time.
Squadron War Diaries that have survived are held at the National Archives (known to many as the Public Records Office) at Kew.
