L12 was hit by shrapnel from ten rounds fired from a 3-inch gun near Dover and settled on the water in the Channel (reportedly at 03:40) on 10 August. The airship was taken in tow by a torpedo boat and when about three miles off Ostende it came under attack from Flight Commander J R W Smyth-Pigott who dropped two 20-lb bombs and six grenades, apparently breaking the airship's back.
At around noon, when alongside the quay in Ostende, the airship was attacked by a number of aircraft, one of these being the Farman flown by Flight Lieutenant D K Johnston who failed to return.
A picture of the airship in the harbour with its back broken is at:

The airship was destroyed by an explosion in the afternoon as the nose section was being lifted clear of the water.
