German Parachutes

Were parachutes used by German balloons throughout the entire war, or were they introduced some time during the war? I have a photo of a German balloon basket ascending with two crewmen and two parachute packs on it. One parachute pack has the inscription "175" on the side of the pack, the other is barely legible but appears to have the number "62" on it. Does any of this help in dating the photo, and would anyone have any info to add? Many thanks.

Parachutes for Balloon Observers??

Stephen:
In the early stages of the war, the Balloon observers did not have parachutes. When the aircraft became armed with the machine gun in 1915 and balloons were attacked, there became a need for parachutes for the observers. While the parachutes were the oldest vehicle in aviation, they had progress very little through the 1800s. The parachutes that were issued to the Balloonists were were designs used by balloonist for demonstration jumps from hot air and gas balloons at county fairs etc. The German Army adopted the Paulas Fallschirm, made by Kathe Paulas a prewar parachutist.
What can be said for these parachutes were they were at best adequate!
Blue skies,
