Did Aleucourt Exist?

Hello,

I am trying to determine if a town was named Aleucourt in France during WWI. I cannot find it on modern maps. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Could it be a typo for Alincourt which is a rather well known German airfield..?

In what sentence is Aleucourt mentioned, like original diary etc...?

Hi Gunnar,

Thanks for your input, I was thinking the same thing. It is given as the location where a French pilot became a POW (source: The French Air Service War Chronology). I don't have the book in front of me to give further details though. I will try to post more later.

Here is more information.....

Bottom of page 106: 10 April 1917 - Brig Chautard of N31 is taken prisoner, after making a forced landing with his Nieuport XVII (serial 1930) within enemy lines at Aleucourt, cause unknown.

N31 was part of the French IV Armee at this time, which I believe was fighting in the Champagne-Ardenne region. Alincourt is also located in this region.

Well, it's a start anyway!

Hello wingedwarrior,

In my opinion, this is not Aleucourt but Alincourt.
N31 was based at Lhéry, west of Rheims, Alincourt is east, about 50km.
I was interested in Nieuport #1930 because there is lot of pictures of it in german markings. This aircraft sported N48 cockerel head insignia and was flown by Robert Bajac and Jacques Roques before being captured.
I was not able to find its pilot because no N48 loss would match the date of the plane capture, until I found in FASWC that the pilot belonged to N31.
At that time , GC11 (N12, N31, N48, N57) was transitioning to Spad 7 and maybe they didn't care to repaint the last Nieuports with new squadron insignia. Or maybe Chautard "borrowed" the aircraft (see this tread). According to german source, he landed on a german aerodrome so Alincourt is very probable.
If you have more infos I would be very interested.
