WW1 Airfield at Ste-Marie-Cappel, Western Front

I am a researcher who's been asked to find the six figure grid reference of a WW1 airfield at Ste-Marie-Cappel on the Western Front, 1917.

It's a tricky one! Can anyone help?

All ideas would be appreciated.

On the French IGN map "2303 E" (Wormhout - Cassel), as in WWW.ign.fr (1:25000), Ste Marie Cappel is in the bottom right corner of the map at lat 50.45.36 N, long 2.30.59 E. As far as I can tell the aerodrome was sited immediately to the southeast of the village in the fields marked "Hofland Dreve". See jpg attached.

If anyone knows otherwise I would be grateful for more accurate information as my grandfather, george Tester, flew from there with 20 squadron RFC in 1917, before being KIA 28.09.17.

Cheers

Bob

Hello Testerchild,
Mike O'Connor's new book from Pen & Sword's Battleground Series, Airfields and Airmen of the Channel Coast, has a good writeup, directions, then and now photos and sketch diagrammes of the airfield layout.
cheers,
shredward

Hi Shredward,

Many thanks! I hadn't heard of this latest book in the series, and I'll be rushing off to get a copy asap. I'm visiting the Salient and general area in August, so it will be a big help. Thanks again.

Bob
