I am currently reading McCudden's " Flying Fury", in which he makes several references to Polygon Wood.

Can someone tell me where about it is / was located?

Is it still visible or was it destroyed during WW2?

I regularly fly over the battlefields of Northern France so if anyone can provide a VOR Radial and DME distance then that would be even better.

Thanks if you can help!

Scottie,

NE of Ypres and yes it is still there. Or more correctly it is there again. By the time the battle was fought there were no trees left.

See these sites for info.
http://battlefields1418.50megs.com/polygon_wood.htm
http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-battle...olygon_wood.htm

A search at google.com will return many results.

It appears we're both wrong Mike.

Here's a contemporary map of the area. Albeit a tad low res.

Polygon Wood is due E of Ypres.

Hmm, that's the trouble with these old maps, the features drift around considerably - you should see how aerodromes creep about! Look at six maps and you'll find everything is slightly different times 6!

I'll dig out my original source again.

Hello,

Polygon Wood was replanted after the war, so it is still there. I adapted a map and colored the wood nowadays (a bit smaller than it used to be).

Regards,
Jan

Looks like I chose the wrong map to copy, I checked in "The War In The Air" Vol 4 by Jones,
and there are two maps in there, one much as shown by Jan, but the other slightly more northerly!

BTW, many remains of pill boxes at Polygon Wood still remain as scars in the peacefull landscape it is today.
Originally there was a race track for horses over there.

Best from Johan

Fabulous question.

I had often wondered about this myself, but never thought to ask about it here.

That's 50,51N. 002,59E. according to the Michelin map.

Hard by the Ypres-Courtrai autoroute.
