Afternoon all

I was chatting to a Royce enthusiast this morning who mentioned that there was an Australian Squadron (AFC) based at a grass aerodrome near the village of Leighterton in Gloucestershire. They enjoyed marvellous hospitality at the magnificent Tudor manor called Chavenage House, one of the finest in England. There was even a book written about them.

???

The answer is yes *- 1 Wing Australian Flying Corps Flying School was based at Leighterton. (after researching www.australianflyingcorps.org) Any information would be appreciated.

G'day,

A great book on this very subject is;

"ANZACS Over England" by David Goodland & Alan Vaughan, published by Alan Sutton Publishing ISBN 0-7509-0277-9

you should be able to find a copy on www.abebooks.com

Regards,

Andrew.

There is another book on this subject.

"Aussies Over the Cotswolds" by James M Woolley Self Published 1992 ISBN 0-6460-0922-2

This might be tad harder to find than the other one.

The "ANZACs Over England" book was a companion volume to a TV documentary on the subject.

Thanks for such a prompt reply Andrew. Found the book and ordered it.

Incidentally I learnt to fly on remote Norfolk Island, 1000 or so miles NE of Sydney, home to the Bounty mutineers after Pitcairn became too small. Enormous fun - no traffic, minimal radio, all joy of flying. Ah the days of youth......

A great read, I know a bloke that bought the last 20 copies of this book. Woolley was a Sydney bloke who had a passion and self published.

If you want a copy let me know and I will see if my mate has any copies left.

G'day Michael,

I had a quick read of your web page, I was talking to a mate that has just returned from Norfolk and he mentioned that they all listen to Perth radio, so it looks as if you did a great job.

As for the flying it sounds great, oh I wish I had the time and the money!!!

Being a super sleuth I have discovered that a DVD with extras and the Video (you choose) of 'Anzacs over England' is still available from the writers who have their own website on:

www.serialbooks.com * for 10.50 sterling

The book is sadly out of print but there are quite a few used copies on the internet.

I think Amazon.com do both the book and the video still for $ 60 for interested US operatives

Also for any interested UK readers, the semi-official officers mess was at magnificent Tudor Chavenage House nr. Stroud in Gloucestershire, open to the public till the end of September on Thursdays and Sundays 1400 - 1700 hours. Small collection of memorabilia on display and part of the grass strip at nearby Leighterton and Minchinhampton survives.

Michael

I must say I'm impressed by your detective work. That sounds like another acquisition for me in the future.

I may be able to get you a new copy of the book here for about $A12.00.

There are no promises they are still available but are you interested?
