Two Seater books

Hi'ya
As someone who lives a long way from anywhere . I can only expand my knowledge with published material that I can order from book stores . My library is hopeless when it comes to two-seater imfo , and I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for any books only the subject , either for German or British Air Services . I am told that CCI and OTF have the best sources for some unit history's . I've just joined CCI and will join OTF soon ( i know , i should be ashamed for not already being a member ) and will try to buy as many back issues as I can that contain two-seater imfo . Is there a list of contents of back issues ?? . Also Dan-San and Rick are working on a book I believe on Schusta's , will this be an Osprey book ? , any idea on a release date ?. Finally is there any other sources ( in Australian , or at least in English ) that can be purchased on these subjects .
Thanks and sorry for a question that should have taken one line but has taken 20 ..maybe I should think about being a politician .

I can thoroughly recommend "Bomber Pilot 1916-1918" written by CPO Barlett, should be readily available second hand via ABEs. If you want a real bargain, Bartlett's son reissued the book under the new title of "In the Teeth of the Wind" - for some reason its being sold at about £7 (GBP).

I think the foreword is different, and some of the photographs are different, but hey, how many new books can you find at that price.


"Pompie" Bartlett flew with Naval 5 and 205 RAF (not long with the RAF as the medics threw him out as being unfit to fly!), flying Nieuport 12s, Sopwith 1.5 strutters, the prototype Sopwith B1, and the Airco DH4.

It's a dam'n good read, and you will even find the occasional Aussi in there as Goble was the CO.

Thanks a lot for that list , thats great !!. The Squadron history's are books I would really want to get , I'll start tracking them down straight away . I have Pi in the Sky already mate , it's a great read . I also have Harvey's D.F.C. and Bar pin and his wings and minuature medals . With reference to 2-seater squadrons, a particularly good account of a Corps squadron's operations can be found in "The Battle Below" by H N Wrigley. *This is the unit history of 3 Squadron AFC.

The down side? *It's as rare as rocking horse $H!T! (Yes I do have a copy! A re-print not the original. The reprint cost me $A90.00 - I couldn't come at $A750 for the original.)

Even if you're mainly interested in the RFC/RAF you should find out about the AFC squadrons. They operated under British doctrine (even if it was with an Australian flavour!)

3AFC was recognised as being an outstanding Corps Squadron (some think the best on the Western Front).

BTW I didn't say "every good student of Aussie WW1 aviation" I said "every good Aussie student of WW1 aviation". The ASWW1AH's members are interested in WW1 aviation as a whole. Some specialise in Australians but there are people interested in all the other bits as well.

Sorry Spinner , I was a little unclear . I do have a good grasp of the A.F.C. Squadrons mate . But I was asking about British or German two seater books .
