An extremely interesting although somewhat odd book is "Nocturne Militaire" written by
Elliot White Springs (an American pilot who flew with 85 Sqdn. and later the 148th Aero). It is odd because it is a series of short stories which although presumably fiction are without doubt heavily reliant on Springs wartime experience. Like another book he wrote, "Warbirds" it can be difficult to determine at what point fiction takes over from history.
The stories in "Nocturne Militaire" are usually centered around some sort of amourous adventure (though not always) but are fairly hard edged. They deal with demobilization, training ,aerodrome life and aviators reintroduction to civilian life. It gives the impression that aviators generally and Springs in particular were living for their next drink and rarely had long to wait.
While the book is not strictly history I think it is hardboiled truth and deals with the aviators war as they (or at least many of them) would have remembered it.
