Bombing of Jabbeke aerodrome 3 Sept. 1917

Hi,

That day the airfield was bombed leaving some casualties with Jasta 20. Any ideas what unit did the bombardment ? I have serious hints it may have been a naval unit...

Thanks and best from Johan

Johan,

sorry for the delay - missed it

No.7 and 7a Squadrons RNAS dropped 14 112lb bombs that night. HP's of course.

Joao

The role of No 7 Squadron RFC, using the RE8, was artillery observation and tactical reconnaissance. The unit might have been located in the appropriate area, but it was No 7 Squadron RNAS that carried out the bombing.

Mike, you have no idea how long it took to pare my post to that length!

The good thing is that I felt no angst while I was doing it - must be the drugs; that, or approaching senility.

On page 38 of the book above the lines, the authors have a short history of Jasta 20. They mention three pilots were "wounded in a bomb raid on the airfield." No other details are given. Were they victims of this raid?

Correct ! Gefreiter Gustav Beerendonk was wounded, Vizefeldw. Friedrich Matthies was seriously wounded and died the next day, and Off.Stv. Hans Malz was as good as killed instantly.
