Solo Bombing Raid on Dover - 17th March 1917

A single engined bomber attacked Dover from the sea on the 17th March 1917and dropped 4 bombs near the Dover submarine pens. No damage was caused and home defence forces failed to intercept or catch the intruder.

The Air Defence of Britain states that the attack may have been made by Marine Landflieger Abteilung I.

Any more concrete evidence in the light of current research?

Hello!

All I have on this raid is that Dover was bombed by a German Marine plane!
That night a group of Zeppelins bombed London and the Marine Zeppelin L39
was shot down by French AA fire at Compiegne.
Maybe Regulus has detailed info ?

A photo I have published into the WWI book shows an aerial shot of Dover, probably taken bu the German Marine who bombed it ?

Not fully 100 % sure about, but is published a few pages further than the annotation into this diary (Le Journal de La Guerrre) about abobove on the London and Dover raids...and simply annotated as "Photo of Dover taken by a German aviator"...

Hi,

Not much to add unfortunately. 16 March a seaplane from See I and on the 17th a naval plane, (not a seaplane) so I MFFA seems evident as a 'visitor' as they even did continue to do so untill the summer of 1918.

Best from Johan
