While spinning off from the thread concerning RFC training losses I find I have questions of my own regarding the losses of American aviators during the war.
From the book
Hostile Skies (James J. Hudson) total losses are given as 569 battle causualties. 164 KIA, 102 captured, 103 wounded, and 200 MIA. Is this accurate? Or does the total MIA include some or all of those captured?
To continue, 319 is given as the number killed in accidents and 335 died of "other causes". How many of the accidental fatalities were training related? Is it safe to assume that the lion's share of deaths attributed to "other causes" were the result of "Spanish Flu"?
I doubt these statistics include American aviators in French or UK service although I truthfully don't know. I am also unsure as to whether it includes mechanics , riggers and other enlisted types other than aviators. Or for that matter does it include USN and/or USMC aviation?
Can anyone cast a little light on even some of this?
Thanks
