Hello all.

When did the Scarff ring gun mounting first appear operationally, and for how many years was it used?

I'm guessing 1916 with the Sopwith Strutter which changed from a Nieuport mounting to a Scarff ring early in it's production. The Scarff ring was still in use during WWII with such as the Walrus and the Swordfish.

P.J.,
We've seen Sopwith drawings for the mount traced in May and June 1916. These were in a set of Strutter drawings. For unknown reasons there was no acceptance date or date originally drawn.
Best regards,
William

From 'Flying Guns WW1':

"Work continued on the gun installations and G. H. Challenger designed the first of the ring-type mountings, which emerged in the early summer of 1915. This was further refined to include a complex spring-type balancing system, but was eventually replaced in British service by the Scarff type, which was introduced in 1916 and became the standard ring mounting thereafter."

The Scarff continued in RAF use well into the 1930s, although it was supplemented by some proprietary mountings of similar type, such as the Fairey 'high-speed' mounting.

By the way. The Scarff mount was designed by Warrent Officer F.W. Scarff, R.N.A.S.

Best regards,
Joe

More good help, thanks all.

New related question:
Is G. H. Challenger the same fellow who designed the Challenger interrupter gear?

As an aside, Challenger also designed the Bristol Boxkite of 1910.
