In Alex Imries' German Fighter Units 1917-1918, Imries writes about Oblt. Greim/Vizefeldwebel Putz (Jagdstaffel 34) successful attack of 23 Aug on two British tanks (also cover illustration for OTF Fall 2002 Vol 17 #3 by Rudolp Stark) Imries states:

"a report came in from the front line via Grufl 14 that confirmed their successes. *Both tanks hor de combat. *One became the seventh victory for Vizefeldwebel Putz, while the other was number twenty-three on Oblt. Greims' victory list."

My question is, when and who would have decided that tanks, like balloons, could be added to an individuals victory list.

Thanks
Joe

The Grufls or Kofls could only report claims of e/a, balloons etc...
The Kofl then send the basic material further to the Kogenluft, who was the "one and only" which made the decision if an victory should be confirmed as a victory(with victory number), confirmed as jZlg(without victory number) or be unconfirmed...!

I am convinced that the Kogenluft decided that the destruction of tanks was NOT confirmed as victories...!

I have also seen Greims war merit record from the archive in München(but have lost the copy in some move.. > ).
In this list of Greims War merits(incl victories) the Kogenluft or Idflieg confirmation numbers are given, but no tanks are listed as victories...

The destruction of these tanks probably lead to some other recognition from the military authorities, like awards or "Annerkennug"..

However, also Osterkamp from MFJ II destroyed a tank...
What the decision the Marineflugchef made in this case is still unclear, but NO official material exists which verify any confirmation...so most certain unconfirmed...
On the other hand the German Marine confirmed destroyed boats by Flyers as victories...

Gunnar:

Many thanks for the information. *As I'm sure you know, Imries references do not include this entry.
I can"t help but wondering what the Kogenluft show as twenty-three for Greim and seven for Putz, or where Imries came-up with these numbers.

On checking ATL, Franks shows Greims' 23rd as an SE5a over Hermies on 15Sep18.

Thanks again and best regards,
Joe
