Hi Everyone,

I am curious what area of the front did the Belgian Air Service operate within? Was it confined to the surrounding borders of Belgium or did it operate farther south, sometimes to assist in French Air Operations? Any and all information is highly welcomed.

regards

As far as I know they only operated along the coastal area of Flanders from a few bases. I believe their pilot training was done somewhere else in France early on in the war. You might want to obtain a copy of "Above Flanders Fields" by Walter Pieters. While it is not a very large book it does give a nice little history of the units, locations and airmen of the Belgian Escadrilles.

There is also a nice Belgian Aviation history website.
I believe I have a link to it on my links page.

Hi,

Most operations were in the province of West-Flanders, so indeed the coastal area. By the end of the war they were also more active over East-Flanders and even the area of the capital, Brussels. King Albert I did do quite some recon flights with Belgian and British units over the front between the beginning of October 1918 and the end of the war.
Some birds were also active in Africa.

Best from Regulus
