Did fighter pilots carry side arms?(continued)
Another good reason for pilots carrying side-arms: suicide (quick painless death) when ones aircraft is on fire. Instead of a being burn to death as the plane falls to the ground it would be better to get it over with a pistol to the head. Such a waste that they did not wear parachutes (apart from the Germans towards the end of the war).
