the pilot is french ace Herteaux is was the only portrait in the group. His name(Herteaux) is written on the right side top. The other drawings have french inscriptions written on the lower right depicting the scene. The writings look like their from the period.

Hdtdoc -

I recognize all of these as Farres' work. They were all done as full size paintings at some point. The Huerteaux portrait is famous as well and Farre did quite a few of them.

I will look in my copy of "Sky Fighters of France" tonight and see if I cannot find out more specifics about the images you posted.

Thanks for posting them !
Mike

I recall seeing a book about Farre called "Skyfighters" on Ebay recently. But I don;'t have a copy of it. I was wondering if any references were made in that book about these drawings. The (downloaded) drawings appear to have been part of a manuscript, and I have 7 of those

I checked my copy of Sky Fighters and found only 2 of the 7 in it, but have seen the others. I do not know if they were in other issues or not, but I do beleive I have slides of them taken from either Sky FIghters or from the originals that are in the Air Force Art Collection.

The two are, drawing #2 called "Bombardment of the Mole and Port of Zeebrugge, 1916" and #7 "Destruction of Drachen Balloons". I think the latter is a bit obvious....

If I get around to re-reading the book and it mentions the reason for these two paintings, I'll re-post. In the meanwhile you can probably find a decent copy of Sky Fighters. It'll probably run (ifd the illustrations are in color) between $80-$120.

Good luck,
Mike

thanx Mike for the reply I will try to get the book "skyfighters" for more research. Your right about the inscriptions, although written in french.
