Dear Forumites,
Please direct your attention to

www.HomeofHeroes.com

... for an excellent account of "The Lost Battalion"; and yes, it includes the famous DH-4 recon... There's even a section on Cher Ami (for the kids!).

Next week, they've promised Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, and a past article was on Frank Luke (haven't read it yet, so I can't tell you how high the Nonsense Factor*might be...)

All in all, an enjoyable read...

VBR to all,
Captain Lewis

Capt.,
Thanks. That was a good read. I have the recent republication of "The Lost Battalion" by Johnson and Pratt but it barely mentions the part played by the 50th Aero. It was good to get the detailed version. There are many heros who become so by having circumstances thrust upon them where it's kill or be killed. These men had ample time for forthought before putting themselves voluntarily in harms way for the sake of men they did not know.
All honor to Harold Goettler and Irwin Bleckley!

Dear Bob,
And you know the damnedest thing about it? Both Goettler and Bleckley didn't have to do it...
That day, they had already done their duty and did their best; no-one would have thought anything less of them if they had never volunteered for that final mission...
Perhaps it's not a desire to kill the enemy that compels us, but rather, at the height of the carnage and hellfire, a desire to help our fellow man...
Those of suicidal bent would do well to keep this in mind...
VBR,
Captain Lewis

Thanks, Capt. Lewis. I'll have to read this, then watch my A&E "Lost Battalion" movie again!
