After reading a book recently on Naval aviation during WW1 I was interested to read about the use of torpedo aircraft by the Germans in early/mid 1917 and that by the end of the year they were no longer in operations due to poor results. I’ve since read Johan’s article on The German Naval Air Serice which helped a little in my understanding but..
Can anyone tell me the strengths of the two torpedo staffels in men/aircraft (are their lists of the aircraft numbers also) .
I can see from past posts lists of ships sunk/damaged but are their lists of losses of men and machines. - I have only been able to work out which pilots were from SEE I in my book and were from Torpedo Staffel by matching with old posts - ie Thomsen, Lowe, Becker and Mallmann
Another point would be that the Gotha WD14 and Friedrichshafen FF 41 used by these units supposedly had a crew of three but checking out previous posts along with lists of losses. I see that for example, on 9th July 1917 two torpedo aircraft from II Staffel were lost but only four men are posted as POW’s??
I know, I’m not asking for much here
