Richthofen officers cap questions...help

Does anyone know of any company that sells replica Richthofen caps with the red button pins on the front? I have searched through this site as well as many others but have been unable to find any information regarding Richthofens uniform except for some color discussion here. (Excuse me but I am fairly new to von Richthofen discussions.)

What was the material? It appears to be leather (black?) with a red rim but I am not sure. The buttons on the front look to be red with a silver trim piece. Most of the pictures I have seen have shown him wearing the "Blue Max" and either no cap or with an officers style hat. I contacted someone on ebay regarding Richthofens cap (whether or not they offer anything like it) and they are interested in details about the hat. Evidently they manufacture hats and are interested in adding his hat to their product offerings.

Cap and uniforms

Welcome to the Forum, Nosferatu!

For information on the German caps and uniforms I'd suggest reading the Kaiser's Bunker web site. Just click on the link below. It has much information including color photos of actual uniforms and caps. Hopefully it will answer your questions.

Very Best Regards,

Thanks

I checked that site a couple days ago and did not see anything but after checking again today I saw something similar but not quite sure it is a likeness.

The hats shown there are cloth material, the Richthofen photo appears to be leather but if anyone can confirm either way???? I would appreciate the info.

The guy on ebay sent me a message with a photo of a cloth hat similar to Richthofens...he want's $90 US, pick your desired size. Seems a little steep to me, I figured about $40-$55 US.

Here is a link to a website for Great War reenactors. It has additional links to companies that sell reproduction uniforms.

I don't know whether the price you were quoted is for a poorly made or well made hat but you need to keep in mind that whatever it is, it is not a mass produced item. The price you were quoted sounds as if it may be a lower quality hat, frankly. There is no market for selling hundreds of thousands of these so they tend to be made hand made, one by one, by specialty companies. The result is very high prices. If you want to be a Civil War or Great War or Revolutionary War, or Napoleonic war, or whatever war reenactor, you can pretty much plan on spending a minimum of $1,500 to $2,000 for a good quality reproduction full uniform with reproduction accoutrements. Those guys who go out on weekends and do reenacting are definitely not engaged in a low cost hobby.
