Hello All,

I have recently been looking at the sites for Cross and Cockade International and for the League of World War I Aviation Historians( Over the Front), and I am considering becoming a member of one of them. I would like to hear from other members of either group about membership and how you like it, and anything else that you can tell me about the socities and being a member.

Any Information or thoughts would be most apreciated.

Regards,

While I haven't been a subscriber for a number of years, I like Over the Front better than C&CI. The presentation is better (especially if you like the "slick" format) and the content is a bit more evenhanded. C&CI, being a British publication, naturally has a lot of British content.

IMHO, YMMV, FWIW...

C&C has always been overloaded with British content, but then who can blame them? And it certainly is good stuff.

OTF is more broad in its approach and I do prefer it. I think it also has a bit more material, though you can't go wrong either way.

I subscribe to both, and I don't mind C&C being too British-biased, as this is where my interests mainly lie. In fact, considering they didn't even show up until the war was almost over, I find OTF a little American biased!

My advice is if you live in the US or Canada go for OTF, however if you're in the UK or Europe go for C&C. If you can afford to, go for both. However in my experience the waiting time for your copy to arrive from overseas can be................................................ ..............................

Hi Vickers!

I myself subscribe to both, but find that Over the Front is a bit more slick in its presentation (commercial appearance) and involves a more rounded series of articles.

I totally agree with Vinces' comment that in the US or Canada OTF is probably the way to go for more bounce for your buck.

They are both excellent publications and I subscribe to both.
The previous comments seem about right to me and if I had to choose only one it would be OTF.

Is there a German language equivalent?

There is a new publication called "Propellerblatt" that is a xeroxed type of publication. It was mentioned here before some time ago. Also, Flug Revue is another German publication that has WWI content as well as other German aviation material. Also, the öfh or Oester Flug Historiker (Austrian Flight Historians) publish a lot of Austro-Hungarian content. So, there is plenty to spend money on!

Also, don't forget the French who publish "Avions" and also special editions on WWI subjects... some of the best print quality publications I have seen.

I really enjoy Avions. The presentation is wonderful, the image reproduction top rate. Unfortunately the latest profile artist they have is, uhm, how to put it - takes a lot of artistic freedom with the general outlines of the aircraft.

My biggest complaint is the lack of English. But that's probably just me.

The hardback on Guynemer is fantastic. I sure hope more is on the way (although I did miss pre-ordering for the Dorme book :-( ).
