I am trying someone from an other forum, he have a letter for a french talking about a german biplane that have been shoot down that day the letter was send with some frabic from the german plane. the plane is said to have spend 1/2 hour over the french troop before being shoot down. it was a 2 seater the observer/gunner having ejjected with no parachute opening and the pilot a young sergent being lightly injuried with just a broken shoulder.
That all I have I have asked for the location of the crash but it do not think he know it.

Bonjour Gregoire,

Ce n'est pas beaucoup !
Ok with the combination of the von Eberhardt list and my databases I came to the following list. The way of working is simple. Take out bomming losses, take out thos who died while sick, who died later, crews that both crewmembers were killed, the ones killed in Germany and accidents, Jasta pilots, the pilots and this leaves us with the unknowns and the observers :
- Lt Kurt Finke, observer, + Amiens
- Gefr. Kurt Günther + Mantaigu
- Lt Siegfried Haupt, observer FAA 205 + Soissons
- Vzfeldw. Otto von der Heydt, FAA 278 + Baconnes
- Flg. Johann Marx + Fins
- Lt. Paul Steiner, observer FA 42 + Lommelet
The observer that died should be one of these six. And If Marx was indeed Flieger, it becomes on of five !
With just a little luck .... : and some other helping hands on this Forum ? ???

Hi

To limit the search a bit further, the daily NB report stated that two aircrafts were missing...

One of these was the 2-s from the Saxon FAA 273 with Vfw Heydt(P) KIA, the observer Lt Georg Simonsen was taken POW....but which was the other a/c..?

Finke was flying in a 3-s of BG 7 and can be excluded, his companions were taken POWs and they were lost in the night against British a/c...

Haupt can also be excluded as his pilot Serg Eugen Templin was also killed...

Also Flg Johann Marx can be excluded as he was KIC together with his observer Lt Schade who was WIC..

Lt Steiner is in my notes not a member of FA 42...and the unit is not known as serving in Northern France at this time...what is your source Regulus..?

I vote for Gefr Kurt Günther as a possible candidat and the unit was perhaps a Schlasta..?...Rick where are you..?

But I have some more possible candidats like, Flg Jakob Thullen killed at Sedan and Flg Karl Puls killed at Roisel...!!

Hi Gunnar,

I did exclude puls, because he was 'Flieger' in my notes.

Source on Steiner is the Deutsche Volksbund fur Kriegsgräberfürsorge. They are known to have problems around units when people weren't long before their dead transferred...

Did miss the Haupt and Templin team. Had already erased the last one as he was Flugzeugfuhrer. My mistake.

It is possible that Gefr. Kurt Günther was a member of Ss 32. That unit was stationed at Montaigu until at least 12Aug18. I do not have any notes that he was indeed a member.

Ltn. Steiner was KIA on 11Aug18 along with Kahlke. They were from FA 213(A). Thullen died i.Kr. (in hospital).

With the others, I agree with Gunnar. I think Puls, at Sedan, is too far removed from the front lines. Probably in hospital.

So, Günther is promising, but Montaigu wasn't in French hands, as far as I know, on this date?? R.
