Russian aviation photo albums

Couple of Russian aviation photo albums became available recently.

The source is St Petersburg Central Government Cinema-Photo-Audio Documents Archive (Централный государственный архив кинофотофонодокументов Санкт-Петербурга).

I do believe the Russian air effort is undervalued in modern WWO publications. Very smart looking pictures there!

Kind regards,

Reinout

YavorD,

Thanks for the pictures, I think they are very interesting. I would like to learn more about aviation in fronts other that the western one. I hope you will continue to post more pictures from this archive/ album.

BTW, what do you think has happened in the second photo? Has the a/c fallen through the ice or is it stuck in heavy snow?

Phil

Hi Phil,

In my opinion, 8 to 10 inches of snow proved too much for the undercarriage of this unfortunate Farman (H.F.16 or 20), no ice. What happened later is shown below (photo from the same album).

Yavor

Unknown markimng

I've cleaned up a couple of pics from the albums signposted by Yavor; have a look at these two pics of a slightly crunched Nieuport IV - anybody ever seen the underwing roundel before?
Obviously not the standard IRAS roundel - maybe an early war variation, or even just a varition applied by this one unit?

Hi JohnMacG,

In my opinion it is a wargame temporary ID sign applied during summer of 1914.
Photos come from XII Corps Aviation Unit (XII корпусной авиационний отряд) album. Date given is 29 July 1914.

Regards,
Yavor

Dybovskiy's modified Nieuport visible on this photo?

Another view of the same aeroplane - Dybovskiy's modified Nieuport. Note fuselage windows and 7-cilinder Gnome with a "Morane" engine cowl.

Note wingroot window intended to improve downward visibility on this Morane-Saulnier G, two-pairs of bracing wires (14 sq.m wing) and 7-cilinder Gnome engine. Photo is dated June 1915.
