RAF Blue Uniform

Ever wondered why the newly fledged RAF chose blue as it's uniform colour on formation in April 1918? I came across this from the book "The First Of The Few" by Denis Winter.

Only the well-to-do could also purchase the new blue uniform introduced in the spring of 1918. Ironically this material had only recently become available in large quantities because the Russian Revolution had put that country out of the war; with the result that Russian officers uniforms, hitherto manufactured in Britain, had lost their market.

RAF 1918 Light Blue Tunic

An example of an Officer's Royal Air Force 1918 Light Blue tunic can be seen at Royal Air Force Uniforms

Hope that it's of interest.

crabs

Article in latest issue of The Hook had this about RAF uniforms;
<The fat of a crab is apparently, blue-grey in color. The RAF uniform is also this color, which is why the Royal Navy refer to RAF personnel as "crab fat" or "crabs" for short.>

cheers, Boom
