Another pilot that looked "odd" was Paul Pavelka from N124. there's a pic of him and Kiffin Rockwell.....I swear he looks like a woman with a fake moustache. It does make you wonder though...did any women try to sneak in?
I know it was the time of the "good ole boys" but what if?
I do recall thinking how young they all looked in 15 and early 16 and how in only a few months they'd all aged centuries. Lufbery is the only one that seems to have been able to hold the line. It was definitely a young mans war...sorry but I've spent too much time on N124 lately...Ok another off topic comment....I really don't think my 17 year old would go haring off to France to become an aviator...I don't know many who would.

It depends also on the photo and angle. E.g. here he looks very normal i think.

I know its totally "OK"!! to do those sort of things nowadays, but did chaps in those days usually pose arm in arm with other chaps? Because that is what Monsieur Dame is doing.

There were exeptions, but...

People were generally much more emotional in their behavior towards comrades of the same sex. Look at Civil War´s pictures!
The "coolness" including showing no physical contact to buddies is a phenomenon widely practised since the 1920ies or even later...

Growing Up in Alabama...

When we weren't out chasing and catching our first cousins, all us guys would pal around together and I mean together. Most of the team would sit in the first three rows of seats on the bus all the way home from a game. Hell, the only way the coach could get us to spread out was to throw bars of soap amongst us. See to a red neck, it's sorta like kyptonite...especially that green Dial. VR, Roadhog
