Moorsele aerodrome

Back in April I flew over Polygon Wood in a Stampe biplane, flying from Moorsele airfield. Does Moorsele have a WW1 history, on the same site as the present aerodrome? I'd be interested in knowing what types would have flown from there, too.

Thanks, Rob

Wwi

The field today is the WWII field where Me109 and FW190 flew. Moorsele had an airfield during WWI but on another place (more in the Menin direction). Marine Feldflieger II and Feldflieger 33 were the most important habitants of the field.

A Belgian historian, Bernard Deneckere, wrote a book about the War in the air above West-Flanders. In his book I found a scetch that situates the airfield of Moorsele in WWI.
It was situated between the road to Ypres and the road to Menin.
As for who was based there I would have to re-read the book again.

Iepersestraat = Ypresstreet
Meensesteenweg = road to Menin
Moorsele kerk = Moorsele church

There's a book on Moorsele aerodrome, in Flemish however, by Lothair Vanoverbeke. Excellent read also.
