I hope you all know I was kidding ......

From a girls perspective, I am very sure all the young women sought out these young knights in shining armor. They were hero's, handsome, bigger then life, had high status, wore a uniform and were exciting! What young women would not what to be with such a young man.

This is one of those subjects one would never think of, the life outside of combat and the airfield. For many of the flyer's, was it life in the fast lane, maybe?

For some I would think they also suffered from sever depression, alcoholism and possible forms of drug addition. There needed to be some form of release some how for ones own sanity.

Good topic.
Cheers,

We need more women's perspectives here. Thanks for commenting!

I would doubt however that many had drug problems while they were flying. Goring did later become addicted to morphine, but he's the only one I know of. Also, in all of the reading I've ever done, you learn that these men drank surprisingly little while at the front. On leave they probably had some great blow outs, but not with a front line squadron. I guess no one would want to encounter MvR with a hangover!

Cheers,

At least one of the LafEsc guys was said to have been a coke head- I can't recall which one right now, but letters written by others mention his usage as
a cause of his deteriorating skills.

Springmaid sheets

Just finished Elliott Springs bio and was a little surprised by his admitted high life; before during and after the war.
